Video Premiere: Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside are on fire in this down and dirty rockabilly ode to hellish service jobs. If “Cage” and it’s minor key blues comes off like a middle finger to nasty managers, it’s because it is. Until recently, the 23 year-old Ford was struggling, trapped at restaurant jobs, eking out creative time to write songs and perform at open mic nights. “It’s not my reality anymore,” Ford, who recently appeared on Letterman said. “It’s nice to be able to say and do whatever you want.”

Seen here as a marionette, Ford threatens and hollers like Ella Fitzgerald if Tom Waits were pulling her strings. Her bandmates, rendered as shadow puppets, thought up the call and response style vocals that lend this ditty a first rate old time quality. “We get comparisons to older music, which is cool, but we didn’t really have any specific idea when we recorded the song,” Sallie says. The song was recorded with a chorus of friends too, depicted here as the little devils in the background.

The whimsical puppetry in the video was created by Sallie’s father, renowned puppeteer Hobey Ford. Asheville, NC native Sallie Ford is now based in Portland with her band The Sound Outside. Their album, “Dirty Radio” is out on Partisan Records.

“Cage” is just about this horrible restaurant job I worked,” says Sallie. “I was never really good at it but that was my reality for a long time, but then I’d go home write songs about my love life. People always think this song is about my family but it’s not really directed towards anything — it’s supposed to be humorous but sort of dark.”

No I.D. named V.P. of Def Jam

Via Billboard:

The night was all about celebrating songwriters nominated for MTV Video Music Awards, but prolific hip-hop and R&B producer No I.D. arrived at ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul team’s pre-VMAs Bowling Mixer with some news of his own.

“I’m (now) executive VP of Def Jam,” the producer announced. “I’m going to keep on doing what I’m doing and take it to another level.

No I.D. has worked with heavyweights such Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna and said that he hopes to keep finding talent and making music.

“Def Jam is a cultural staple,” No I.D. said. “It’s not just a label, it’s part of the culture that I came up in and that I’ve been involved with for 20 years. It’s very important that the next generation of executives grab it by the horns and keep it on track as it grows.”

As the evening went on Saturday night at the Lucky Strikes Bowling Lanes in Hollywood, the real-time trending topic quickly moved toward the Britney Spears tribute.

“I was lucky enough to work on ‘Me Against the Music’ with Britney and featuring Madonna,” said The-Dream. “I remember being ecstatic that as an artist of her magnitude she was cutting a record of mine. I’m just very grateful for the opportunity that she gave me back then.”

Abou “Bu” Thiam, a VP of A&R at Def Jam who was featured in Billboard’s 30-Under-30 earlier this month, also said he thought that Spears receiving recognition for her work is merited.

“Britney has had great success in her career,” Thiam said. “I think she deserves a tribute.”

Lil Wayne Releasing Carter IV at Midnight THIS SUNDAY!!

Lil Wayne is going to dabble in a little midnight madness. Already scheduled to perform at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Weezy has just announced that he’ll also be dropping his highly anticipated new album, Tha Carter IV, at midnight, right after the show.

“I am extremely excited to be the first artist to utilize such an amazing idea. I hope that I can open the door for others,” Lil Wayne said in a press statement.

The YMCMB rapper’s latest will be released digitally via iTunes, Amazon and other legal MP3 download destinations at 12 a.m. on August 29. Those still dedicated to physical CDs need not worry since the album will be in retail stores later that Monday.

The release of Tha Carter IV will be the capstone to a big night for Weezy, who is also up for Moonmen in the Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration categories. And despite Wayne’s skateboarding accident over the weekend (he tweeted that he needed nine stitches for a gash over his eye), he is sure to take the Nokia Theatre stage by storm this week.

“The MTV Video Music Awards are one of the most watched and respected shows in the industry,” Ronald “Slim” Williams, CEO of Cash Money Records, said in a statement. “Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening.”

With Jay-Z and Kanye West throwing a wrench into traditional album-release strategies with their Watch the Throne project, Lil Wayne has chosen to make his own release an event by coinciding with another. “Lil Wayne continues to change the game; this time with a new release strategy that demonstrates the power of the VMAs to grab the attention of music fans,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said. “After our millions of viewers experience the VMAs, they can go online at midnight and download the album they’ve all been waiting for.”

Tha Carter IV’s latest single is “She Will” and will feature appearances from, T-Pain, Tech N9ne, Rick Ross, John Legend, Jadakiss, Nas and Busta Rhymes, among others.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for Best New Artist at VMA.MTV.com.
