Benchmarks New Single “Girls and Boys” Takes a Kerouac Look at Modern Dating

Nashville-based indie punk band Benchmarks released their debut full-length Our Undivided Attention on March 24th via SofaBurn Records. The album’s third single “Girls and Boys” has a driving, midtempo rock sound with gorgeous harmonies and a story about the world of dating that most single people experience these days.

We’ve been playing this one live for the last two years and I’m glad we finally put it to tape,” says vocalist Todd Farrell Jr., who also pulls double duty as the lead guitarist for the Columbus punk band Two Cow Garage. “It started with a friend and I wanting to write a very shoegaz-y dream pop song like The 1975 or something. We got started on it, but it never really turned into anything. About a year later, I still had the chord progression in my head, and I took it to the band. We developed the idea even further, gave it a weird 12/8 time signature, and it became what it is now. Lyrically, it’s sort of about our modern culture of dating, hooking up, or what have you, always looking for something new, and being afraid to lose what you have. I basically stole a lot from Kerouac and it’s sort of a companion piece to “American Night” from our last EP (which also stole a lot from Kerouac, ha).

Our Undivided Attention immediately follows The American Night EP, released in June 2015 and was mixed by Jay Maas (Defeater, Transit, Polar Bear Club, Make Do And Mend) and produced by the band themselves. Listen to the album’s first two singles “Frames” and “Let You Down” on Spotify.

Order physical copies via SofaBurn Records.

Tour dates:
4/4 – Atlanta, GA – Vinyl (with Killing Kuddles and Reconciler)
4/5 – Charlotte, NC – The Milestone (with Almost People and Old Heavy Hands)
4/6 – Greensboro, NC – The Corner Bar (with AP/OHH)…

Benchmarks Releases Latest Single “Let You Down”

Nashville-based indie punk band Benchmarks released their debut full-length Our Undivided Attention on March 24th via SofaBurn Records, hear their latest single “Let You Down”. The song attempts to be a much needed reminder that we could all be a bit kinder to one another, while the lyrics also paint a picture of a city that has become overgrown and has started to lose its small town charm.

The idea for this song came after a friend called me out on something I said that I, perhaps, didn’t think through,” says vocalist Todd Farrell Jr., who also pulls double duty as the lead guitarist for the Columbus punk band Two Cow Garage. “We all build our own ‘houses’ around ourselves based on the way we see the world, but it doesn’t mean that the rest of the world outside doesn’t exist. Basically, we all need to try a little harder to be kind. I used the backdrop of a rapidly developing city (like Nashville, where we live) to tell the story of tearing our neighbors down to build ourselves up, and how maybe that’s not the best way to treat people. Jack [Whitis] came up with most of the musical ideas in this one. He’s got a talent for writing ‘misdirection’ parts, as I call them. Melodic ideas that don’t go where you think they’re going to go, but in a very satisfying way.

Our Undivided Attention immediately follows The American Night EP, released in June 2015 and was mixed by Jay Maas (Defeater, Transit, Polar Bear Club, Make Do And Mend) and produced by the band themselves. Listen to the album’s first single “Frames” on Spotify.

Based in the small, dusty junction town of Creedmoor, Texas (population 202) the creative duo Known as Alien Knife Fight craft their sound at all hours in their big, old 1930’s era house/home studio, situated on 3.6 acres that they call Big Bottom Farm.

Bassist/vocalist Monique Ortiz has been performing in duos for over 25 years mainly out of necessity. “I just couldn’t find that third instrument that was the right fit, so rather than be hindered by that, I try to fill out the sound in other ways.”

Her first notable duo project, Bourbon Princess (1997), led to over a decade of collaboration and with members of the band Morphine, which ultimately led up to the formation of A.K.A.C.O.D., with Morphine saxophonist Dana Colley and Binary system drummer Larry Dersch.

In 2010 Monique moved from Boston to Austin, met multi-instrumentalist Michael Howard and they started writing and recording music together. With Mike’s primal beats and Monique’s powerful vocals and growling 2-string slide bass and fretless bass playing, the two gradually shaped their sound into something sinister, sexy, soulful and groovy all at once.

Currently AKF are working on a new record. In March of 2017 they will be touring the west coast in support of Scott H Biram.
