“I always said you just don’t replace Chuck Mosley. So, to continue Primitive Race I knew we would need to push into new territory. I was always a big fan of Paw and I think that Mark (Hennessy) brings a whole new tool belt to what we’re doing. It’s exciting to have this new chapter.” – CHRIS KNIKER

“I was a big fan of Chuck so to be carrying the torch in Primitive Race is something special. I’m going to just be myself and work on adding a new element to the band. I really like what the guys are doing, and It’s been fun to get started writing for this record.” – MARK HENNESSY

“He (Mark Hennessy) has a cool vibe. It will be great to have him in the mix this time.” – MARK THWAITE

Legendary Alt-Rock Front-Man Remembered in ‘Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road, by Douglas Esper

Cropped Doug

On December 3rd 2019, ScoutMedia released Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road, by Douglas Esper.

“For twenty years I was Chuck’s fan, band mate, cheerleader, unknowing drug mule, AA plus one, friend, and I tried to help him write his autobiography,” said Douglas Esper. “After he passed away November 9th 2017, I continued working on a book about the recording of Chuck’s solo record with producer Matt Wallace (Faith No MoreDeftonesThe Replacements), a behind the scenes look at the reunion shows Chuck performed with Faith No More in 2016, and the ups and downs of dealing with Chuck Mosley, warts and all.”

Chuck Mosley and Douglas Esper performed over 150 shows together, recorded under the Chuck Mosley name as well as the indie-pop moniker, Indoria, and they acted together in the short film, Like An Open Heart It Shines by David Collupy.

“Chuck battled so many demons, but he remained a kind-hearted soul who loved to make other people laugh until the end. Our tour wasn’t always pretty and we spent a lot of time bickering, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We tried like hell to reintroduce Chuck Mosley to the world. This is our story from my point of view.”

Chuck Mosley spent time fronting Faith No More, Bad BrainsCementVUA, Indoria, and had just released a new album, Soul Pretender, with the band Primitive Race the week he passed away.

Douglas Esper appears in the upcoming found footage horror film, Dwellers, produced by Ellefson Films (David Ellefson of Megadeth). The film was written, directed, and stars Drew Fortier, who toured with Chuck Mosley and Douglas Esper in 2017 and is also directing Thanks … And Sorry, a documentary about the late singer/songwriter.

Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road is available now via the publisher at ScoutMediaBooksMusic.com/Store and Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other retailers.

Back

One hundred sixty shows, two rushed recording sessions, a reunion with an old band, and a Hail Mary shot at a comeback represent the tip of the iceberg of my twenty year journey with Chuck Mosley.

Chuck (Faith No More, Bad Brains, Cement) toured the globe as a vocalist, appeared on magazine covers, rubbed elbows with idols, and through it all he remained 100% convinced he didn’t deserve your praise. Yet, he desired acceptance more than almost anything else.

A self-proclaimed, “junkie and a liar,” Chuck shot himself in the foot, over and over, by shooting up elsewhere on his body. Meanwhile, I stumbled and fumbled and pushed and pulled and scraped and cried and begged and borrowed to earn him extra chances to prove himself. We loaded a van with a guitar, a conga, and an unfinished legacy hoping to reintroduce the world to Chuck Mosley.

Advance Praise for Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road

“I’ve gotta hand it to Doug: this is not a hack job, the only way to address a topic like Chuck with any authenticity is to do the hard time, and he definitely did that. Not a pleasant story by any stretch, his gaze does not shy away from ugly truths, yet in spite of this he’s managed to put together a touching dedication to his subject. Well done.” BILL GOULD (Faith No More)

“Douglas Esper’s Reintroducing Chuck Mosley not only reintroduces the late former Faith No More singer but reimagines him and, in doing so, reimagines the whole concept of what a music memoir is. Esper’s riveting read dispenses with Mosley’s time in Faith No More in one page just twelve pages in. It is a bold and brave statement of intent. This man is much more than the band that made him famous, and the book paints a picture of the real Mosley that no conventional biography could. Reintroducing Chuck Mosley is part biography, part road trip, part redemption tale, part buddy chronicle but so much more than that. Published novelist Esper’s lively writing style makes the book sing like fine fiction, but with the bitter sting of truth. ADRIAN HARTE (Author of Small Victories: The True Story of Faith No More)

Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road is detailed, funny, heartbreaking, stranger than fiction and a must read for any fan of Chuck Mosley or Faith No More. It is a truly inspired piece of writing that serves as a great reminder to Chuck and his legacy. We are sure he would’ve been proud if not a little embarrassed…[ha ha].” JIM BROWN (FaithNoMoreFollowers)

A few words on Chuck Mosley:

“I was blown away by his voice. So original. Chuck has a great style that you can tell it’s him as soon as he starts singing. I’m a big fan and I was honored when he asked me to appear on his new stuff.” JONATHAN DAVIS (Korn)

“Some of Chuck’s and Faith No More’s songs sound like we all come from the same family! He tore shit up!!!!” Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels (RUN DMC)

“I was always a fan of his … He wore his heart on his sleeve … I thought he was pretty fearless to sing about some of the things he sang about.” MATT WALLACE, Producer (Faith No More, Maroon 5, The Replacements)

“Chuck Mosley was a huge part of what made Faith No More’s first two albums so classic, groundbreaking, and cutting edge. It has been argued that Chuck single-handedly created rap-rock with the release of the timeless anthem, ‘We Care a Lot.’ I would not disagree with this bold claim.” – GREG PRATO, author (The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion)

PRIMITIVE RACE Release Lyric Video for “Bed Six” Off of ‘Soul Pretender’

Primitive Race Cartoon

PRIMITIVE RACE, featuring the late, legendary former FAITH NO MORE and BAD BRAINS front-man Chuck Mosley, has released a lyric video for the single “Bed Six,” off of their 2017 released Soul Pretender LP.

“The funny thing about Bed Six is all of our songs on Soul Pretender had working titles of Bed and just a number. For whatever reason Chuck decided he was just going to call this song Bed Six and work the title into the song. I gave him so much hell about that and he refused to change it. So we ended up just going with it. It was just an inside joke.” – Chris Kniker

“When I listened to the music, ideas just came pouring out,” Mosley had previously stated. “I couldn’t say no to doing the record. When we completed the first few tracks, I found myself wishing I had written them. Not just the lyrics…just good heavy riffs and grooves really sucked me in. The melodies and words came super easy with this music. Even though it’s a whole different vibe it brought out a side of me I haven’t experienced since writing with Faith No More.”

Early Praise for Soul Pretender:
It’s hard not to view Primitive Race’s sophomore outing, Soul Pretender, as the next chapter in Chuck Mosley’s epic comeback story. On the record, out Friday on Metropolis, Mosley is positively radiant, sounding better, sharper and more engaged than he has since the heyday of Faith No More’s Introduce Yourself. After years of being relegated to the struggles of “solo” outings and hard-to-find Cement discs, Mosley here is raspy – he wears his age incredibly well – and utterly menacing as he lurks behind lurching guitars and the occasional twinkle of a keyboard, the landscape darker than his previous work. And, damn, does it work! – Pop Dose

If Primitive Race’s stylistic trajectory is to be considered, as exhibited in the group’s two albums; add to that, the invigorating (but at the same time, inadvertent) inclusion of Mosley’s memories into this latest offering – then there should be something more that can be expected from the collective’s future projects. For the meantime, let your senses get drowned in pleasant torture in the sonic machinery of this scorching undertaking. – CrypticRock

Time will tell what the next incarnation of Primitive Race will hold, but if the first two albums are any indication, then it should be just as great while continuing to establish the supergroup’s place in the world of punk and industrial rock. – mxdwn

“Mosley discussed Soul Pretender with me during our interview about two months ago, praising it as unlike anything he had ever heard and claiming that it spoke to him in a way that he felt beyond compelled to work on this project. After listening to the album, I can understand why Mosley was drawn to the project as Soul Pretender is a unique and seamless collision of alternative, industrial, and punk rock. Just as Mosley said, it really is unlike anything else. His pride for the album as a whole was not only completely justified, but his own performance stands out as one of the best among his diverse career. While it is a common cliché to claim someone went out with a bang at the top of their game, it’s clear that Mosley truly did. As a whole, Soul Pretender, is an excellent record and a must hear for fans of 90’s alternative and hard rock as well as those who prefer modern rock from the last decade. After listening to Soul Pretender a number of times, it is clear that Primitive Race is truly a band to watch out for.” Spill Magazine

Primitive Race Releases Lyric Video for “Cranial Matter”

Soul Pretender Climbing College Radio Charts Throughout North America

Primitive Race has released the lyric video for their “Cranial Matter,” off of their November 3rd released Soul Pretender LP, to celebrate the album’s dubut on NACC Top 200 and #27 Weighted / #22 Unweighted College Radio Charts. The band is also donating 100% of 2018 album sales to MusiCares to benefit substance abuse treatments for artists battling addiction in honor of late front-man Chuck Mosley, who passed away a mere 6 days following the album’s release.

“‘Cranial Matter’ is probably my favorite song on the album because it was a classic example of Chuck doing what he did best; it was punk rock that ear worms the listener to singing along without knowing the words.” – Chris Kniker (Founding Member)

“When I listened to the music, ideas just came pouring out,” Mosley had previously stated. “I couldn’t say no to doing the record. When we completed the first few tracks, I found myself wishing I had written them. Not just the lyrics…just good heavy riffs and grooves really sucked me in. Primitive Race Share “Dancing On The Sun” Off of ‘Soul Pretender,’ in Honor of Late Front-Man, Chuck Mosley

On November 3rd, Primitive Race released their compelling Alternative Rock album Soul Pretender, with vocals handled by Chuck Mosley (Faith No More, Bad Brains, Cement, VUA), music by Erie Loch (LUXT, Blownload, Exageist), Mark Gemini Thwaite (Peter Murphy, Tricky, Gary Numan), Bass and song-writing from founding member Chris Kniker, and drums by Dale Crover (The Melvins). On November 9th, Chuck Mosley died after many years battling addiction, making the long awaited album the legendary front-man’s swan song. In honor of Chuck, the band has chosen to share his favorite track off of the album, “Dancing on the Sun,” and to donate 100% of 2018 album sales to MusiCares to benefit substance abuse treatments for artists battling addiction.

Says Chuck’s long-time friend Chris Kniker:

“I wasn’t prepared for any of this. Most only knew Chuck Mosley as the former singer of Faith No More; to me was a friend with whom I had formed a special bond over the past 17 years. Chuck was funny, witty, charismatic, and charming in a way that was only Chuck. He was truly one of a kind. Chuck inspired Mark, Erie, and I, and I knew we did the same for him. He felt we had created something that allowed him to grow as an artist. He was thrilled and honored to be playing on a record with Dale Crover. I was just happy to know that we made a record that I enjoyed; a group of friends creating something together. I am sure that Chuck would want us all to learn and grow from his struggles. Addiction is a horrible burden to bare for the afflicted and their loved ones. If you are or know someone who needs help don’t be afraid to ask.”

In 2016 Lead vocalist Crispin Earl took a rather unique approach to coincide with the concept of the album, Decade. He took the opportunity to reproduce five unreleased songs which were written prior to the first
incarnation of The Veer Union in 2004, bringing them back to life, as well as combining five brand new songs to bridge the span over a DECADE. Now, with the BOX SET release of Decade: History of Our Evolution, The Veer Union will continue this theme by Crispin reproducing the five remaining songs as well as adding five brand new songs again proving that The Veer Union can stand the test of time by incorporating the original vision of the band and blending it with the current incarnation. Decade: History of Our Evolution truly takes the listener through a musical and emotional journey that represents all that is The Veer Union.

The album was self produced and written by Crispin Earl.

Crispin Earl recently started his own Record Label, Rock Shop Entertainment (RSE) and this will be the labels first ever worldwide release! Crispin says, “in the past I have had the pleasure of working with many great people at various record labels and learning from some of the best in the industry. At this point in my career I feel the most important part of being an artist is not having someone impeding on the creative process and now with ROCK SHOP ENTERTAINMENT (RSE), I will have the creative freedom to do as I wish in all creative aspects which is what makes this one of the most exciting releases of my entire career.”
