Stream Doombird’s New Album Early

11751934_975365525839302_1475617516278012033_n

Indie/electronic band Doombird from Sacramento are streaming their new album Past Lives now on Soundcloud. The psychedelic synth-pop offering will be released via Gold Standard Records (owned by Artery Recordings) on 12/30 and includes tracks that were recently featured in the TV shows Blood & Oil (ABC), Stitchers (Freeform), How to Get Away with Murder (ABC), as well as the indie film I Live for You.

The album was created within a little over a year,” says vocalist Kris Anaya. “The theme we tried to capture was more of a dark dance electronic record with a haunting voice. The lyrical content within the record focuses mainly on my struggles with anxiety. Even while I was recording the record I was suffering with it. Mainly the inspirations fall in between a lot of Ambient music as well as Electronic Dance music i.e (Tim Hecker, Caribou, Bibio). I personally believe this record vibes well on a rainy day or when you are taking a hike in the woods.

Anaya (who is also the former frontman of the indie band An Angle) began Doombird alongside Joseph Davancens in 2010. After a couple of unofficial releases and Davancens spending some time as a touring member of Tycho, the two collaborated with Aram Deradoorian (Geographer), Mike Sparks (Mr. Metaphor), Dusty Brown, and Arlene Deradoorian (Foster The People) to record Past Lives. The ten track offering was mixed and mastered by Robert Cheek (Band of HorsesDeftonesChelsea Wolfe). When performing live, Anaya and Davancens are accompained by Ben Edrington, Cory Phillips, and Fernando Oliva.

Pre-order Past Lives on iTunes.

Singer-songwriter Kris Anaya and producer/multi-instrumentalist Joseph Davancens want to chart new psychic territory in music. They first collaborated as Doombird in 2010 with a self-titled, self-released full-length album featuring a twelve-piece chamber orchestra. Two years later they swapped their orchestral ambitions with conceptual ones on the synth-heavy Cygnus, an album that explored the deeply personal emotional lives of historical figures through Anaya’s perspective. Now, a more mature and experienced Doombird has synthesized these parallel and distinct aesthetics with Past Lives, their official debut. For this recording, Anaya and Davancens found creative seclusion in the foggy hills of Stinson Beach, California, alongside musicians Mike Sparks, Aram and Arlene Deradoorian and Dusty Brown. There they transmuted moody, melodic Synth Pop into clockwork Krautrock and oceanic ambient textures. Over powerful rhythms, Anaya’s singing floats through the mist like the fleeting voices in the psyche. His lyrics invite listeners to fall madly in love or lose themselves in madness. Past Lives lingers on existential questions. Should I sleep? Should I dream? What’s the use?

Sleeptalk Sign Deal with Gold Standard Records

sleeptalk_2017

LA space-rock quintet Sleeptalk has inked a deal with Gold Standard Records, a label owned by Artery Recordings. The group celebrated the signing by premiering a music video for their new single “Indio California” and announcing plans for a 2017 full-length. The video, which was directed and shot by Shadow Born Group, portrays the idea of not being afraid to express yourself and to always know there is light at the end of the tunnel. The lyrics, however, are inspired by an annual concert series that the band regularly attends.

‘Indio, California’ is a love song,” says vocalist Anthony Fitzpatrick. “The song is based off experiences at the Coachella Music Festival. Every year myself and a large group of friends gather together and camp out at the festival. When you step onto those Polo fields you instantly gain this positive/beautiful energy, It feels like that is the only place in the world. ‘Indio, California’ is about those experiences. The type of experiences everyone longs for.

“Indio, California” is available now on iTunes.

About Sleeptalk:
Hailing from Southern California, Sleeptalk formed from the ashes of the now defunct band Like Giants. After the disbandment in 2013, vocalist Anthony Patrick and bassist Paul McGill found themselves pining for a new sound that stretched beyond the confines of their previous group. Joined by Jason Fitzpatrick (guitar), Justin Melchor (guitar) and Jacques Harmandjian (drums), the quintet make use of strong, haunting hooks that weave into atmospheric melodies. The self-described “space rock” sound creates the framework for Fitzpatrick’s alluring lyrics of sex and youthful love which can be heard all throughout the debut EP Pure and the follow-up Young. At the end of 2016, the band inked a deal with Gold Standard Records, a company owned and operated by Artery Recordings. They released a music video for the single “Indio, California” and announced plans for 2017 full-length.

Kenny Dubman Releases Lead Single Off Debut Solo LP, ‘Reckless Abandon’

kd-porch

New Jersey Guitarist and Songwriter Kenny Dubman (Prophet) has released “Ain’t Too Late For Memphis” off of his debut, solo LP Reckless Abandon. “Ain’t Too Late For Memphis” and Reckless Abandon are available to order on his Official SiteiTunes, and Amazon.

” ‘Ain’t Too Late For Memphis’, the leadoff track from Reckless Abandon’, is a comeback anthem. It’s the story of a musician that’s been out of the game for a long while and longs to break back in, but is not quite sure about how to make it happen….yes, it’s a bit autobiographic! ‘Memphis’ is really just a metaphor for getting off your ass and jumping in with both feet, which is definitely the route I took to make the album. Wrote the songs, rehearsed the band, and got in the studio as quickly as I could. Full steam ahead with reckless abandon, literally and figuratively!” – Kenny Dubman

Reckless Abandon is the first solo effort from NJ native and lifelong six-stringer Kenny Dubman, a veteran of 3 albums with NJ melodic rockers Prophet. Loaded with earthy, organic 70’s influenced hard rock, Reckless Abandon will most certainly fill a gaping void in today’s musical climate. “I wanted to make a song record first; making a guitar record was never really part of the equation” says Dubman, though guitar fans will likely want for nothing on this offering. Blending elements of Bad CompanyDeep PurpleKansas, and Lynyrd Skynyrd with subtle hints of QueenOzzyMontrosePink Floyd, and RushReckless Abandon pays homage to it’s 70’s rock roots while still forging an identity of it’s own….due in no small part to Dubman’s powerful, raspy vocal performances. Lyrically, Reckless Abandontackles some deep and dark subject matter; not much boy-meets-girl fare on this record. “I’m not sure where these song ideas came from; I feel like they were channeled through me rather than originated within….like I didn’t really write them. I think the great Tony Joe White sums this syndrome up best: ‘….the music is all given to me anyway. Writing and playing and doing music not for the benefit of having a number one record, just to let it out of your soul, means somebody has fed it down to you.’ That’s right on the money”. Origin non-withstanding, Kenny Dubman has created (or channeled) something special on this record.

Do it justice. PLAY IT LOUD.

Sunndrug (Ex-Norma Jean & Spitfire) Debut New Song

sunndrug_press-photo

Virginia Beach quintet Sunndrug has signed with Mind Over Matter Records to release their debut full-length, Exit Wounds, this fall. The group is streaming a new single from the album called “Shining”.

‘Shining’ was the last song we wrote before starting to record the album,” says vocalist Jimmy Reeves, who is also known for being the original bassist of the band Spitfire. “Its working title was ‘bonham song’ because the sonic inspiration for it came from the way Led Zeppelin played the blues. Its a jilted love story based around the setting of a well curated online life being a mirage for a person whose reality doesn’t live up to it. The end of the song is a moment on the record I’m particularly proud of because I think the music evokes something even without lyrics.

Sunndrug began as a songwriting outlet for Reeves as he worked his way through a crumbling relationship of over 10 years. When Reeves started writing Exit Wounds, he rekindled a musical partnership with former bandmate Chris Raines, who was the original drummer of Spitfire and also spent some time drumming in the metalcore band Norma Jean. The album constructs a narrative of a man coming apart at the seams as he attempts to get a fix on a reality that is nothing more than sand in his fist. After they completed the 12 tracks they enlisted a seasoned crew of musicians to help them take the songs to the stage.

Exit Wounds was mixed by Jeremy Simeon Howell Griffith and mastered by Andreas Magnusson. Pre-orders will soon be live at http://www.mindovermatterrecords.com/ and the album will also be available on vinyl.

Tour Dates:

9/10 @ 25 Watt – Richmond, VA
9/23 @ Back Bay Brewing – Virginia Beach, VA
9/24 @ The Garage – Winston-Salem, NC
11/05 @ Back Bay Brewing – Virginia Beach, VA

About Sunndrug:

No matter how far we wander, we always return home. For Jimmy Reeves and Chris Raines, this is true in the sense of not only their geography but also their musical partnership.

Exit Wounds began as a song-writing outlet for Reeves as he worked his way through a crumbling relationship of over 10 years and his former bandmate was yearning for a new musical venture after his hiatus from the road. The two continued to construct a narrative of a man coming apart at the seams as he attempts to get a fix on a reality that is nothing more than sand in his fist. During this time, Reeves made his way back to Virginia Beach.

The duo completed the song writing and then enlisted a seasoned crew of musicians to help them take these songs to the stage and Sunndrug was officially born.

Their debut record touches on themes of self-loathing and self-idolatry – that voice in your head that whispers to you that no one knows better than you do. Besides, you’re numb. Keep going, no matter the cost.

Exit Wounds is dark not only in its subject matter, but also in its tone and instrumentation. By seamlessly integrating electronics into the ebbing and flowing crashes, parts of this debut LP almost feel industrial, but not without a thick layer of melody floating on top of it. This is the sound of despair. This is the sound of thinking you’ve got it all figured out when nothing is as it seems.

Emo trio Boat Race Weekend from Spokane, WA has announced that their new EP Throw Your Head to the World! will be released on 10/14. Today, the band is streaming the first single “Broken Teeth” on Soundcloud, a full-bodied track that is a reminder to smile, even while facing tough times.

It’s about having the strength and the courage to continue on, to work hard and persevere through the pain with your chin up,” says guitarist/vocalist Evan Kruschke. “It’s about smiling when it seems the world has given you nothing to smile about and knowing that despite whatever you have been through, or done, or seen, you are loved, and a blessing to many.

Throw Your Head to the World! was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Dawson Scholz (The Ongoing Concept) at Talk Studios in Rathdrum, Idaho. The cover photo was shot by Gianluigi Fiori, a bar owner in Italy that Kruschke came to know after spending some time performing in the country.

These are easily 4 of our favorite songs we have ever created,” says drummer Jay Orth. “We believe that this EP captures our true sound; from the song-writing, to the instrumentation, to the production. About Boat Race Weekend:

Boat Race Weekend is an indie/alternative band based in Spokane , WA, comprised of three childhood best friends. Drummer Jay Orth, guitarist/singer Evan Kruschke, and bassist Collin Price attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA where they were asked to perform at a University event on short notice. They had to form a band and learn 9 cover songs in one week. When told that they had to have a band name, they jokingly came up with Boat Race Weekend after their favorite, legendary hometown event, the hydroplane races. The band then went on to perform at more Gonzaga events and house shows. Eventually, the trio began writing original music and performing around Spokane and throughout the Pacific Northwest. The band released their debut album, The Talisman in March 2015 which was featured on Indie Rock Cafe’s “Best DIY music of 2015”. The band’s live energetic performances earned them a place on Music Connection’s “Hot Live and Unsigned Bands of 2015”. Boat Race Weekend has constantly been playing shows throughout Washington, Idaho, and Oregon and has performed with bands such as The Story So Far, Comeback Kid, and Listener. The new EP “Throw Your Head to the World!” was recorded in rural Rathdrum, ID and was produced by The Ongoing Concept’s Dawson Scholz.

Not A Planet Debut New Song “The World We Know”

img_5846

Indie rock quartet Not A Planet have released their new EP Smoke Bombs and Cigarettes: The History of Now on September 9th.  Listen to their second single “The World We Know” now.

“‘The World We Know’ is a tongue in cheek ‘State of the Union’ and commentary on our culture’s proneness and desire for violence, drama, and distraction,” says vocalist Nathan Corsi. “We tried to encapsulate the tension musically with very restrained verses and an explosive, frantic climax in the chorus. It’s almost like going through news cycles and waiting for the next tragedy or atrocity. The pressure just builds until suddenly, it bursts.”

Smoke Bombs and Cigarettes: The History of Now was produced by Jacob Bunton and engineered by Jason Elgin, with mastering by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Muse, Dr Dog). The EP is the band’s sophomore release and follows up 2013’s The Few, The Proud, The Strange LP. Pre-orders are available now at the band’s website and fans that sign-up for the mailing list will receive a free download of the first single “Tell the Truth”.

Every day, Not A Planet is hustling.

In a circuitous route, Nathan Corsi, an Akron, Ohioan, made his way to Kansas City after a featured role in a year-long documentary about life as a busker in New York. It wasn’t long before Nathan and Liam Sumnicht, drummer native to KC, who love each other very much, made a rock and roll baby together, and named it “Not A Planet”. A rotating cast of bass players tagged in and out alongside the duo on national tours and local shows for years, but in 2012, William Sturges enlisted as a permanent player. They toured extensively as a trio until 2015, and during that time, put out the NapSack EP and The Few, The Proud, The Strange LP. Their music won local and national awards, and earned fans from all over the world. Accompanying Not A Planet since mid-2015, Nathan Showalter is touring with the band, with keys and harmonies that fill out further the already lush sound.

New music from the Not A Planet EP Smoke Bombs and Cigarettes, is being released late summer, with the first single “Tell The Truth” streaming now.

Undeniably fervent performances, bristling harmonies and catchy-as-fuck rock and roll songs are the Not A Planet signature.
